AGRP Resumen e información sobre la proteína

AGRP Fondo

Resumen de gen: This AGRP gene encodes an antagonist of the melanocortin-3 and melanocortin-4 receptor. AgRP appears to regulate hypothalamic control of feeding behavior via melanocortin receptor and/or intracellular calcium regulation, and thus plays a role in weight homeostasis. Mutations in this AGRP gene have been associated with late on-set obesity. [provided by RefSeq, Dec 2009]
General information above from NCBI
Estructura de subunidad: Interacts with melanocortin receptors MC3R, MC4R and MC5R.
Dominio: The presence of a 'disulfide through disulfide knot' structurally defines this protein as a knottin.
Localización subcelular: Secreted. Golgi apparatus lumen.
Especificidad del tejido: Expressed primarily in the adrenal gland, subthalamic nucleus, and hypothalamus, with a lower level of expression occurring in testis, lung, and kidney.
Implicación en la enfermedad: Obesity (OBESITY) [MIM:601665]: A condition characterized by an increase of body weight beyond the limitation of skeletal and physical requirements, as the result of excessive accumulation of body fat. Note=Disease susceptibility is associated with variations affecting the gene represented in this entry.
Similitud de la secuencia: Contains 1 agouti domain.
General information above from UniProt

Agouti Related Protein (AGRP, or AGRT), is an endogenous antagonist of the melanocortin receptors MC3R and MC4R found in the hypothalamus and exhibits potent orexigenic activity. AGRP can act as a competitive antagonist to proopiomelanocortin (POMC)-derived peptides at the melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R), and that this homeostatic mechanism is important as a means of coordinating appetite with perceived metabolic requirement. AGRP is upregulated by fasting while intracerebroventricular injections of synthetic AGRP lead to increased appetite and food intake. Thus, AGRP is a powerful orexigenic peptide that increases food intake when ubiquitously overexpressed or when administered centrally.
